St. Lucia Rum Punch

How to Make the St. Lucia Rum Punch, A Cocktail That Packs a Punch

St Lucia is famous for many things: glorious beaches, friendly locals, delicious food—and, of course, our rum punch! Our rum punch is a drink that sums up our Caribbean island in all its glory. It is fruity and delicious, and if made right, it packs a punch (excuse the pun!). St. Lucia rum punch is prepared using rum made from sugar cane syrup and a variety of fruit juices for a deliciously balanced blend of tangy and sweet.

Although this well-loved drink tastes best when enjoyed on a beach watching the sun go down, you can make St. Lucia rum punch to enjoy at home and enjoy memories of St. Lucia if you’re abroad. At least you can close your eyes and pretend you’re there! Here is a simple, fail-safe recipe for making St. Lucia’s signature drink wherever you are in the world.

St. Lucia Rum Punch Ingredients

3 cups of orange juice
3 cups of pineapple juice
1 cup of lime juice
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
6 shakes of Angostura bitters
Grenadine syrup to taste
1 1/4 cups of sugar syrup
2 1/2 cups of light or dark rum (The traditional way of making St Lucia rum punch is to use white rum,
but you can substitute dark rum if you prefer it – the result will be a sweeter, warmer and darker colored version of this tropical favorite).

Mix the rum, juices, spices, and syrup in a large bowl or pitcher. Add the grenadine to taste (they vary in sweetness, so stop when you have reached your preferred level) and watch the color change to that of a gorgeous sunset. It is best to then leave the entire punch in the refrigerator for a few hours, so the flavors get a chance to mingle together. Serve over ice in chilled glasses for the best experience, and garnish with orange, pineapple, cherries, grapes – or whatever fruit you fancy. You can then tell yourself that at least you’re getting your five a day while you’re getting tipsy!

Once you’ve got to grips with the basic recipe you can tweak it to your tastes – some people add coconut water for even more of a tropical flavor, while others like a splash of fizzy water for a bit of a zing. Rum punch is a very versatile drink that I am sure you can make yourself.
