If you’re spending any time in St. Lucia, you’ll quickly notice this beer everywhere: Piton Beer. While we’re famous for our majestic twin peaks, we’re just as proud of the drink many visitors call the best local beer in St. Lucia.
Piton Beer is our local lager, and in St. Lucia, we like to encourage visitors to “Drink Piton like a local.” It is a light, refreshing pilsner, and a nice cool Piton perfectly balances out our tropical heat.
A Local Favorite with a Striking Look

The photo above is actually me getting the idea for this blog post. I was in the middle of building a DIY coffee table out of some old pallet wood when I took this shot. I caught the moment just as I was about to pour myself a nice large glass filled with ice to enjoy these two Pitons while taking a break.
You can’t miss it in a bar. The blue and gold branding is absolutely striking and stands out immediately. On the label, you’ll see the iconic Piton mountains, which is a tribute to our UNESCO World Heritage site.
The branding sometimes changes for special occasions or holidays, but that classic mountain logo is always the star. It’s brewed right here in the south of the island in Vieux Fort by the Windward and Leeward Brewery (WLBL).
What many visitors don’t know is that Piton Beer is also known as “La Bière Sent Lisi” in Kwéyòl, which translates to “The Beer of St. Lucia.” It was officially launched on October 7, 1992, during a time of massive national pride for us, just after Derek Walcott won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Since then, it has become a true symbol of St. Lucian culture.
Why Our Airbnb Guests Love It
As an Airbnb host, I’ve seen firsthand how much visitors enjoy this beer. Most of the time, I’ll place two cold Pitons in the fridge to welcome incoming guests. It’s a small gesture, but after a long flight, most people really enjoy that first taste of the island.
The feedback I get from my guests is that Piton is nice and smooth. Even people who are “hard-core” beer drinkers or critics usually have good things to say about it. I’ve noticed the ladies are especially huge fans of it because it isn’t too heavy or bitter.
Technically, it’s an American Adjunct Lager with about 5% alcohol by volume. It’s made with specially selected malt, hops, yeast, and maize (corn). That maize is what gives it that crisp, floral, and slightly sweet finish that makes it so easy to drink when the sun is blazing.
Award-Winning Quality
We don’t just love Piton because it’s ours; it’s actually world-class. Our “Mystic Mountain Brew” has won multiple gold and silver medals at the Monde Selection Quality Awards in places like Belgium, France, Spain, and even Malta. In fact, it’s picked up gold medals consistently in recent years (2016, 2017, and 2018), proving that our little island brew can compete with the best in the world.
Where to Drink Like a Local
If you book a stay at IslanderKeys, you won’t have to look far for your first taste. Having two cool Pitons waiting in the fridge at no additional cost is our default; we do it for all our guests. Whether you’re coming from the airport or anywhere else as a traveler, you’ll find them well-chilled in the IslanderKeys apartment fridge, ready for you to enjoy the moment you step through the door.
To be completely honest, while I always enjoy a cold Piton, it isn’t my absolute favorite beer to drink every day. However, it is a fantastic lager compared to others you’ll find across the Caribbean, and it’s the heart and soul of our local celebrations. You will find it at every family gathering, party, and event on the island.
There is actually a funny local debate about the best local beer in St. Lucia. Most tourists fall in love with Piton because it’s so light and easy, but many locals actually prefer Heineken or even Guinness because they want something with a bit more “bite.” Some locals even joke that Piton is just the water used to rinse out the Heineken tanks—but don’t let them fool you, it’s a source of huge national pride!
If you’re looking to save a few dollars, here’s a tip: the cost of a Piton varies depending on where you are.
- At Hotels and Tourist Spots: You might pay anywhere from $4.00 to $6.00 USD per bottle.
- At Local Rum Shops and Bars: You can find it much cheaper, often between $1.50 and $2.50 USD (about $4 to $6 XCD).
During the holiday seasons, I usually make sure my fridge is stocked mostly with Piton. When friends and family visit, it’s the first thing they ask for: “You have some Piton?”
Exploring the Piton Family
The brand has grown a lot over the years, though some versions were only here for a short time. Besides the classic lager, you might come across:
- Piton Shandy: These are very popular, especially the Lemon and Ginger flavors. They are much lighter (around 1.2% alcohol) and very refreshing.
- Piton Malta: Our non-alcoholic version that many locals grew up drinking.
- A Note on Piton Gold: You might hear locals talk about “Piton Gold,” which was a stronger (6.5% alcohol) version with a sleek black and gold label. While it made quite a splash when it launched in 2018, it is actually no longer in regular distribution. It’s more of a legendary “limited edition” piece of our brewing history now!
Final Tips for Your First Sip
If it’s your first day on the island, don’t be afraid to ask for a Piton. Most visitors have read about it before they even land and are eager to see if it lives up to the hype.
For the best experience:
- Keep it Ice Cold: Nobody likes a warm beer, especially in our sun. It’s best served at about 5°C.
- Buying in Bulk: If you’re staying for a week, you can grab a six-pack at any local supermarket, like the Massy Supermarkets you’ll find up north inside the malls (Rodney Bay and Gablewoods). If you really want to stock up like a local, you can buy a whole crate from a local distributor—there are several around the island like WLBL distributors or even some of the larger wholesale outlets.
- Pair it with Local Food: It goes perfectly with a plate of Green Figs and Saltfish or some spicy Lambi. For me, though, nothing beats pairing it with some fresh grilled fish. If you find yourself at Duke’s Place on a Friday night, I highly recommend ordering their grilled fish—it’s easily some of the best on the island. I usually enjoy one or two cold Pitons while I’m there; the crispness of the beer just cuts through the smoky flavor of the fish perfectly.
Whether you’re lounging by the pool at your rental or liming at a street party, a cold Piton is the true taste of St. Lucian hospitality.
Cheers!
